Two Men Accused of Creating Fireball Inside Locked Clover Pool Area, Sheriff Says

Published On:

CLOVER, S.C.York County deputies are searching for two individuals who were seen on camera breaching a locked fence and detonating an explosive device inside a neighborhood pool area shortly after midnight on July 5 that resulted in a massive fireball.

According to Queen City News, the suspects allegedly caused damage of about $6,000 at the Somerset Subdivision on Poplin Place before making off in a white SUV.

Surveillance Footage Shows Fireball Detonation

Just hours after Independence Day festivities, on July 5, just after 12:15 a.m., security footage captures the two males scaling the fence to the gated pool area. While the other looks around the toilet area, one of them is seen turning off what looks to be a phony security camera.

The two then planted an explosive device in a trash can close to the restrooms, according to deputies, causing a firestorm blast that damaged $5,800 worth of property. Both the explosion and the suspects’ quick departure from the area were caught on surveillance tape.

Several still photos from the footage have been made public by the authorities, who identified the escape vehicle as a white SUV.

Public Asked to Help Identify Suspects

The public is being asked to help the York County Sheriff’s Office identify the two males in the video. Crime Stoppers of York County encourages anonymous tips or calls to the sheriff’s office from anyone with information.

Subdivision residents told reporters they were startled that such a criminal act occurred in their normally peaceful area. The fact that the pool area was locked and shuttered for the night has sparked concerns about how safe HOA-managed areas are after hours.

Authorities also pointed out that if the suspects are apprehended, altering or turning off a security system may result in further charges.

Ongoing Investigation by York County Deputies

As deputies examine the video and forensic evidence from the site, the matter is still being investigated. The York County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page and regional news partners, such as Queen City News, will provide updates.

Neighborhood vandalism involving fireworks or small devices has previously garnered media attention around July 4. However, according to deputies, the destruction posed a glaring risk to public safety, and the incident went much beyond fireworks.
