Tracking Beaufort County’s Traffic Deaths: New Map Shows Locations of 2025 Fatal Crashes

Published On:

County of Beaufort, S.C.Residents can now see more clearly where fatal crashes have happened in Beaufort County this year thanks to a new interactive map that provides information on the locations most likely to have significant traffic accidents.

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety reports that 13 people have died on county roads in 2025, which is a little fewer than the 17 fatalities that were reported at this time last year. As of August 7, three pedestrians, two motorcyclists, and two cyclists had been killed.

Most Fatal Crashes Happened on Major Highways

According to officials, all but one of the deadly crashes occurred along major thoroughfares like S.C. 170, U.S. 278 and U.S. 21. These busy thoroughfares, which link Hilton Head Island, Beaufort, and Bluffton, have long been acknowledged as high-traffic areas.

This year’s victims—a bicyclist and a pedestrian—died in suspected hit-and-run incidents, and neither case has resulted in an arrest as of yet.

Death Rate Lower Than Previous Year

Although Beaufort County saw 26 roadway fatalities overall at the end of 2024, if the current trend continues, 2025 is expected to see a somewhat lower number. Considering that South Carolina is one of the top 10 states for the number of traffic deaths per capita, the decrease is little but noteworthy.

Beaufort has considerably fewer fatalities than larger counties like Charleston, Greenville, and Spartanburg, but officials warn that every death is an avoidable tragedy.

The New Interactive Fatal Crash Map

Each road death so far this year is approximated by the upgraded mapping program. Users can examine information about each occurrence, such as the type of crash and connections to previous coverage, by clicking on the individual marks.

In addition to helping target enforcement and safety improvements in the most problematic areas, county administrators hope the resource will promote safer driving practices.
