HALIFAX COUNTY, N.C. The National Weather Service warned people of the possibility of localized floods, intense thunderstorms, and gusty winds in a weather alert that was issued Thursday evening for several eastern North Carolina counties.

The following counties were under the alert, which was issued at 6:44 p.m. and lasted until 7:45 p.m.:

At the moment, radar monitored a powerful storm system traveling 5 mph southeast across the area. Up to 40 mph winds were predicted, which could topple tree branches and disperse unsecured outdoor objects. (Observer & News)

The NWS cautioned against driving on flooded roadways and warned that flash flooding could occur in areas that are susceptible to severe rains.
Thunderstorm and Lightning Safety Tips
The following safety tips for people trapped in storms were offered by the National Weather Service:
- Seek shelter indoors as soon as thunder is audible or skies appear threatening.

cords, plumbing, and windows
once inside. - If shelter is unavailable, avoid open fields, isolated trees, and elevated areas.

water, metal objects, and ridge tops
, which can conduct lightning.
An average of 25 million lightning strikes occur in the United States each year, with around 20 fatalities, the most of which occur in the summer, according to the NWS.
Driving Safety in Rainy Conditions
Particular caution should be exercised by drivers during evening storms. Among the recommendations are:
