Raleigh, North Carolina.Following an hours-long police pursuit and standoff that spanned many Raleigh neighborhoods, authorities said Wednesday that a 21-year-old male had been brought into custody.

Chase Begins After Assault Call

According to Raleigh police, earlier in the day, officers were called to complaints of an attack on Solar Drive. The suspect, named as Elmer Bautista Candela, fled the scene and stole a pickup truck as they tried to apprehend him.

Candela allegedly collided with another car at the crossroads of Raleigh Boulevard and Yonkers Road during the pursuit. There were no reported injuries in the collision.

Standoff on Bashford Road

According to police, Candela abandoned the car and ran away on foot toward Bashford Road on Corporate Drive, marking the conclusion of the pursuit. Candela holed himself in a house in the 100 block for several hours before being apprehended without any problems as officers surrounded it.

At the time, a number of other people were inside the house, but none of them were hurt or arrested. Investigators said they are still trying to figure out how they are related to Candela.

Tied to Previous Police Assault

Candela was reportedly connected by authorities to another incident that happened on August 16 when a suspect escaped after colliding with a police car on Thistlebrook Court with a pickup truck. According to the police, Candela was behind the attack.

Officials confirmed that Candela already had outstanding warrants for attempted larceny, assault by strangulation, and injury to personal property.

Next Steps in Case

After Wednesday’s chase and standoff, Raleigh police indicated further charges are anticipated. The operation was aided by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol and the Wake County Sheriff’s Office.

Candela is still being held while the investigation is ongoing.
