Victim Shot on I-26, Suspect Fled on Foot

The incident happened before noon on August 18 along I-26 West, close to Exit 82 to Highway 773. A woman who was in the car with 45-year-old Wilfrido George Luna was shot, according to the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities have not yet disclosed her name or age.

Luna left the scene of the shooting and ran over multiple highway lanes, passing through a forested area before reaching the Mid-Carolina Club golf course.

Arrest During Active Golf Tournament

Luna’s effort to flee was stopped in the golf course parking lot when he was confronted by police, who engaged him in a brief standoff. A tournament was in progress when the arrest took place, forcing golfers off the course and causing temporary lockdowns at surrounding schools.

According to officials, Luna was unarmed at the time of the arrest and did not continue to struggle after the initial altercation.

Tractor-Trailer Interaction Raises Questions

Luna is said to have waved down a tractor-trailer and spent an unknown period of time inside it before to his capture. Investigators haven’t explained what happened during that time, though, and he didn’t drive or take control of the car.

The motivation behind the shooting is still unknown, and the sheriff’s office is still looking into it. Authorities attested to the fact that the defendant and victim were traveling together at the time of the occurrence and knew one another.

Murder Charges Filed

After being taken into custody, Luna was officially charged with murder and put into the Newberry County jail. No other injuries associated with the incident have been recorded as of Tuesday morning.

Traffic and other public amenities were severely disrupted at the shooting site, which was approximately thirty minutes from Columbia and on the way to the Greenville-Spartanburg corridor.
