PEAK, S.C.The ancient town of Peak in South Carolina is providing tourists with a chance to travel back in time and discover a unique piece of Civil War history as America gets ready to commemorate its 250th anniversary.
The Palmetto Trail’s Peak to Prosperity section crosses a wooden bridge over the Broad River just outside the municipal borders. The old Broad River bridge was demolished by Confederate forces during the Civil War in order to impede the Union Army’s progress into the state, despite the crossing’s picturesque appearance today.
Remains of the ancient building can still be seen beneath the water on clear days, acting as a chilling reminder of the area’s hardships during the war.
A Walk Through History
The trail serves as a living history lesson in addition to being a recreational route. Ahistoric signs identify the location of the bridge’s later reconstruction, about six miles away. The laborers who completed the task are depicted in old photos at the location, providing a physical link to the past.
