Following a foot pursuit and search in Clarkesville on Wednesday afternoon, local law officers apprehended a man who was wanted on an outstanding child support warrant.
At 1:53 p.m., a transport deputy saw a suspicious person with a potential warrant close to Railroad Street Apartments and GA 197 South, according to the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff’s office reported that the man instantly ran on foot, with the deputy pursuing him, when the deputy attempted to approach him.
Police officers from Clarkesville and Demorest, as well as sheriff’s deputies, promptly surrounded the area with a perimeter. Drones and tracking dogs from the Banks County Sheriff’s Office and Baldwin Police Department were used to help with the search.
According to the sheriff’s office, the suspect, John Weston Welborn, 45, was apprehended at 2:27 p.m. without any more incidents.
There are more charges pending in addition to the initial child support warrant.
Habersham then requested details on the arrest through an open records request to the sheriff’s office. Welborn had been arrested numerous times, according to the records clerk, but the office refused to provide those specifics.
