Since reopening in the autumn of 2024, North Georgia Technical College’s (NGTC) Towns County Adult Education Center has accomplished a significant milestone by giving its first GED diploma.
Kiley Shaffer of Hiawassee received the accolade for being the first adult education student to finish her courses and pass all four GED exams at the new facility. According to NGTC, the HOPE Scholarship, which paid for the tests and can be used for future college-level study, helped her achieve her goal.
Deanne Oppermann, an adult education instructor at NGTC, expressed her pride in Kiley. She has earned her GED and is currently pursuing a CNA degree, which will provide her with a better professional path and greater income.
Residents of Northeast Georgia now have access to important opportunities again thanks to the adult education program’s reopening. Adults who wish to advance their education or enhance their employment opportunities can enroll in free GED preparation courses.
Drop-in classes are available Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 2 to 7:30 p.m. In order to register, students between the ages of 16 and 18 need to produce a high school withdrawal form and have a parent or legal guardian present.
The Towns County Recreation Center, located at 900 North Main Street in Hiawassee, is home to the NGTC Adult Education Center.
