Clayton, North Carolina. The National Weather Service in Raleigh has issued a flood warning for Johnston County, predicting that by Tuesday afternoon, the Neuse River will surge above flood stage.
Water is predicted to approach the boundary of the Neuse River Greenway Trail, causing modest flooding along both banks, according to officials.
Flood Levels and Timing
The river was 7.5 feet high late Monday, but it is expected to rise above its 9-foot flood mark overnight. By early Tuesday afternoon, the crest is predicted to reach a peak of around 10.1 feet, and by early Wednesday morning, it will have receded below the flood stage.
At Covered Bridge Road, floodwaters may overflow onto the greenway, endangering cyclists and pedestrians.
Safety Warnings for Residents
Residents are advised by authorities to stay away from riverbanks, particularly after dark when it is more difficult to detect rising waters. Low-lying areas of the Greenway trail should be avoided, and drivers should be on the lookout for any possible water on neighboring roads.
Following recent intense rainfall in central North Carolina, which has increased runoff to already high river levels, the alert was issued.
Next Update and Preparedness
Tuesday afternoon is when the National Weather Service is anticipated to provide its next update. Authorities advise locals to keep an eye on alerts and be ready for possible road closures.
People who live in flood-prone locations should keep emergency supplies on hand and relocate valuables to higher ground.
