Manhunt underway after suspect flees deputies in Habersham County

A manhunt continues in Habersham County for a man who fled from law enforcement early Wednesday morning. A deputy reported the man attempted to run over him before fleeing on foot.

Just before 8 a.m. Wednesday, June 11, Habersham County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Rob Moore told Now Habersham, “At the moment, the search for the individual continues.”

Asked why deputies were pursuing the man and whether he is considered dangerous, Moore responded, “That’s really all I’m able to say currently.”

Early morning search

As Now Habersham first reported, the incident began around 3:30 a.m. near the intersection of Chopped Oak Church Road and Juniper Trail on the north end of Habersham County. After allegedly trying to strike the deputy with a vehicle, the man fled on foot.

Units from Habersham County Emergency Services Station 9 were called to evaluate the deputy, who was not transported to the hospital. At last report, the deputy remained actively involved in the search.

The subject is described as a white male with dark hair wearing brown pants and a black shirt. He is believed to still be on foot.

The Habersham County Sheriff’s Office asks anyone who sees a man matching this description in the Chopped Oak area to call 9-1-1.

“Do not approach him,” the sheriff’s office wrote on social media.

Heavy law enforcement presence

Law enforcement urged drivers to avoid the search area located off Talmadge Drive between Hollywood and Toccoa.

Multiple agencies were assisting in the manhunt, including the GBI, Banks County Sheriff’s Office, Baldwin, Demorest, and Clarkesville Police Departments. In addition, the Georgia State Patrol’s aviation unit, local K-9 units, and drones were requested to take part in the search.

Initial reports from the scene said one man was taken into custody and transported to the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office for questioning.

Authorities have not released information as to his potential connection to the case.

While the search remains active, authorities continue to urge residents to avoid the area and to report any suspicious activity by calling 911.
