Local high school Teams of the Week

Now Habersham and BLITZ Sports are honoring Northeast Georgia region Teams of the Week for each full week of athletics during the academic year. The teams for this week are

Football Jefferson Dragons, Rabun County Wildcats & Habersham Central Raiders

Of all the teams, the Dragons made the most impact. a 19-0 victory over Marist, the top-ranked powerhouse, at home on Saturday. Although Jefferson was ranked first in its own category, it hasn’t been that long since Marist was so thoroughly dismantled. Prior to the championship game, the War Eagles had won 14 straight games and were the State Runner-Up, just like Jefferson. Marist was last defeated by more than eighteen points in 2016. You should learn a lot from that.

In the meantime, Rabun County defeated White County 42–6 at home after playing an almost perfect game. Only a few first downs were allowed on that side of the ball, aside from a defender slipping on a deep pass that resulted in a 77-yard touchdown. With five consecutive scoring drives and all 42 points in the first half, they destroyed the Warrior defense while not displaying much of the playbook offensively.

Last but not least, Habersham Central also merits recognition. The Raiders more than lived up to the predictions that this is the year, defeating the rivals Stephens County 27-3. Although this game could always go either way, the defense deserves a lot of credit for their efforts in preventing Stephens County from scoring a touchdown for the first time since 1993. That is an amazing accomplishment.

Softball Banks County Lady Leopards & Lumpkin County Lady Indians

Last week, Banks County outscored opponents 38-8 and finished an absurd 5-0. Among those victories were victories over Athens Christian (9-1), Oconee County (12-4), Stephens County (5-3), East Hall (6-0), and Newton (7-0). The squad in the top ten is now 8-1 overall.

Lumpkin County has a 3-0 start in area play and is 6-1 overall. The Lady Indians swept GAC 11-3 and 13-2 last week and defeated Forsyth Central 17-4. If you do the arithmetic, that’s 41-9 in three games.

Volleyball Tallulah Falls Lady Indians & Union County Lady Panthers

Last week, Tallulah Falls defeated a very strong Rabun Gap team 3-0 after coming back from a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2. After that, there was a tri-match sweep against Elbert County and Stephens County.

Last week, Union County lost 4-0 and finished 8-2 overall in sets. The victories were against Gilmer, Rabun County, Dawson County, and Lumpkin County. The season record for the Lady Panthers is 5-1.

Boys/Girls Combined XC Tallulah Falls

In their debut competition, the Northeast Georgia Championships in Athens, the Lady Indians finished in second place. Fifth place went to the Indians. The top TFS runners were Teagan Penland (7th) and Olivia Henderson (3rd).
