Tuesday night, two prisoners at the Athens-Clarke County Jail were admitted to the hospital following suspected drug overdoses that occurred less than half an hour apart. According to a jail official, deputies discovered both males unconscious in their cells and immediately performed life-saving procedures before EMS took them to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
Deputies found a 28-year-old Caucasian male who was not responding in one of the housing units at around 5 p.m. According to Keith Sims, public information officer for the Athens-Clarke County Sheriff’s Office, jail officials promptly alerted medical personnel and started life-saving procedures. The person who had regained consciousness was taken to a neighboring hospital for additional care after Emergency Medical Services (EMS) arrived.
According to Sims, workers were notified of a second unresponsive person in a different housing unit at around 5:26 p.m. Once more, jail staff arrived and gave the 36-year-old black man emergency care. After responding, EMS and the Athens-Clarke County Fire Department (ACCFD) took the person to a nearby hospital for a medical examination.
Sims stated that when deputies discovered suspected drugs within the dwelling unit, both people are being assessed for possible drug overdoses.
There is currently no other information available.
Hours after the jail announced another prisoner had passed away, the suspected overdoses took place. The prisoner, whose name has not been made public, passed away at the hospital after being discovered unconscious in his cell. His reason of death is still unknown.
