Georgia’s KobuletiThe Georgia Prosecutor’s Office said this week that a man in Kobuleti faces significant criminal charges for allegedly beating his ex-wife, breaking a protective order, and purposefully causing property damage.
The charges are related to a troubling occurrence that occurred on July 25. According to the Georgia Prosecutor’s Office, the suspect allegedly went to his ex-wife’s house in contravention of a protective order granted by the court and physically beat her.
Protective Order Violated
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs’ inquiry, the guy had previously received a court order prohibiting him from seeing, speaking to, or visiting his ex-wife. Investigators said that he twice approached her property in spite of those limitations. The man returned on July 25 with the woman’s sister, and during the altercation, he became physically aggressive.
He allegedly damaged the woman’s car during the incident in addition to assaulting her.
Charges Filed and Arrest Made
The defendant was promptly taken into custody after the assault and charged under many provisions of Georgia’s Criminal Code:
-
Article 126
Violence against a family member causing physical harm -
11 Prima 187
Intentional damage to a family member s property -
11 Prima 381st Prima Article 1
Failure to comply with protective order obligations
Georgian criminal law stipulates that the maximum penalty for these charges is five years in prison.
Citing public safety and the possibility of recurrent violence, the prosecutor’s office intends to file a motion to place the accused in pretrial imprisonment as a preventive measure.
Ongoing Investigation
The Ministry of Internal Affairs is still actively investigating the matter, and investigators are still collecting evidence. Concerns regarding Georgia’s enforcement of protection orders and the structural difficulties in safeguarding victims of domestic abuse have been rekindled by the episode.
