Georgia Bookstore Celebrated as One of the South’s Best for Literary Community and Culture

Published On:

Southern Living has named Georgia’s oldest bookstore one of the South’s must-visit destinations for bookworms, not just because of its extensive collection but also because of its cultural significance and decades of influence on the literary landscape of the region.

Southern Living’s latest list, “7 Bookstores Every Book Lover Should Visit, According to Southern Authors,” included Charis Books & More, which was established in 1974.Renowned Southern authors, such as best-selling author Tayari Jones, who hailed Charis as America’s oldest continually operating feminist bookstore, provided recommendations for the list.

A Legacy of Literature and Inclusion in Georgia

Currently housed in Decatur, Georgia, in collaboration with Agnes Scott College, Charis Books has evolved beyond a simple retail establishment. For more than 50 years, it has been a center of literature in metro Atlanta, promoting social justice, feminist writing, and a range of voices.

The Greek words forgrace and thanks are the source of the store’s name, Charis, which reflects the spirit of its purpose. Since its inception, Charis has established a solid reputation for:

  • Curated book selections

  • Community-focused events

  • Support of local and emerging writers

  • Spaces for activism and dialogue

The store offers a friendly environment for readers of various backgrounds by regularly hosting book clubs, youth organizations, adult programs, and book fairs, according to Charis’ website.

A Store Chosen by Southern Writers for a Reason

The way this bookstore continues to support literary and communal development in the South is what sets it apart, not only its past. Noting how Charis continuously brings together local writers, national voices, and international authors in one common area, novelist Tayari Jones characterized its gatherings as legendary.

It now has more space and can work with the Agnes Scott College campus community at its new location at 184 S. Candler Street in Decatur.

The current hours of the store are:

  • Monday to Saturday: 10 a.m. 7 p.m.

  • Sunday: 12 p.m. 6 p.m.

Joining a Prestigious Southern Bookstore List

Along with other prominent Southern bookstores in places including Florida, Texas, Louisiana, and South Carolina, Charis Books & More was chosen for its distinct environment, strong community links, and role in encouraging reading among all ages.
