Durham, North Carolina. Before being shot and killed earlier this week, 21-year-old London Powers, a student at North Carolina Central University, reportedly experienced multiple instances of domestic abuse, according to her relatives. Her mother thinks the tragedy may have been avoided if there had been more forceful response to prior police calls, according to WRAL.
Fatal Shooting in Durham
Durham Police responded to a gunshot at the Camden Pointe apartments on Monday afternoon. Powers, a Washington, D.C. native, and 23-year-old Damien Tinsley were both found by officers with gunshot wounds. Powers passed away from her wounds the next morning in the hospital, while Tinsley passed away at the site.
Tia Powers, her mother, stated that her daughter had visited the flat to get her possessions following the breakup. Tia clarified that she was going because she was focused on her objectives.
Previous Threats and Police Calls
London had phoned the police several times during the relationship to report abuse and threats, according to her mother. She claimed that this was not the first time Tinsley had shot at her daughter; only a few weeks prior, she had been slightly wounded by a bullet.
If they receive a call from a woman stating that her life is in danger, they should respond immediately. Tia Powers stated that perhaps this could have been prevented.
Remembering London Powers
Coworkers and friends characterized London as promising, compassionate, and giving. One of her coworkers, De Andre Gainer, stated that she wasn’t the kind of person to stir up trouble. It was wrong, and she didn’t deserve it.
Investigation and Resources
Police are still looking into what happened before the shooting, according to WRAL, and they haven’t disclosed any new information regarding what happened right before the shooting.
The National Domestic Violence Hotline can be reached at 1-800-797-9233 (SAFE) by anybody who is a victim of domestic abuse. The North Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence provides county-by-county resources at nccadv.org for local support.
