A statement from the Dunwoody Police Department said Detective Laverty died on Tuesday and was a dedicated public servant whose absence would be felt for a long time.
Laverty had worked for the DeKalb County Police Department for three years before joining the Dunwoody Police Department for eight years. His coworkers recalled him as a trustworthy and kind officer who cultivated close bonds with people in the department and the community.
The department posted on social media that he gave his time and service, and his absence has created a gap that will be difficult to fill.

The cause of Laverty’s death has not been made public as of Wednesday afternoon. Other than confirming his death, the department has not released any further details.
