Battleship North Carolina Undergoes Repairs Nearly a Year After Tropical Cyclone 8

Wilmington, North Carolina.Crews are finishing repairs onboard the historic Battleship North Carolina, almost a year after a possible Tropical Cyclone 8 dumped extraordinary rains to sections of Brunswick and New Hanover Counties. According to WECT, the storm’s intense downpours resulted in a major water intrusion into the Admiral’s Cabin, a crucial area on the ship’s front deck.

Storm Damage to a Historic Vessel

Scott Williams, a maintenance technician, reported that during the storm, two inches of water accumulated inside the cabin and half the deck was rotted out above us. Between 500 and 800 liters of water had to be pumped out by the crews. The 80-year-old ship, which was put into service in 1941, faced a significant restoration task as a result of the floods, which destroyed the carpet and rusted the steel.

Repairs and Reinforcements

Damaged flooring has been removed, leaks have been halted, and damaged steel has been replaced by the repair crew. However, they do more than just restore the cabin to its former condition.

According to Williams, we have improved the location of our welds to keep them out of the weather and have corrosion resistance and maintenance upkeep that we did not have in previous years. The purpose of these upgrades is to prolong the ship’s structural life and stop further flooding.

A Legacy of Resilience

There is a lengthy history of the Battleship North Carolina surviving damage and carrying on with its activities. The ship remained open throughout repairs and survived torpedo blows during the war, precisely 82 years prior to Tropical Cyclone 8. The warship is a living piece of North Carolina history, according to officials, in part because of its tenacity.

Within the next week, crews anticipate that the Admiral’s Cabin will be completely restored and operable.
