ATHENS, Ga. – A two-year investigation into an elaborate fraud scheme culminated last month with the arrest of an Athens man.
Authorities took 30-year-old Alex Brown into custody on May 29 following a search of a residence in the 200 block of Jennings Mill Parkway. During the search, officers with the Athens-Clarke County Police Department’s (ACCPD) Property Crimes Unit and Northeast Georgia Drug Task Force uncovered a “trove of evidence” tied to mail theft, check fraud, and identity theft.
ACCPD Lt. Katie Jenkins says investigators recovered numerous stolen and counterfeit checks, stolen mail, and fraudulent IDs. Officers also recovered materials used to create fake checks, including blank stock paper and a magnetic ink cartridge.
Brown currently faces 16 felony charges. Police say the case remains active and additional charges are expected as the investigation continues.
