Columbus, Georgia.Dr. James McTyre Jr., a well-liked educator and counselor in Columbus, was tragically shot more than two years ago. For his friends and family, however, the anguish is still as intense as the unsolved murder mystery.

Beloved Educator Gunned Down After Morning Walk

On the morning of February 26, 2023, McTyre finished his daily stroll in Lakebottom Park and made a stop at a Circle K gas station on Wynnton Road. Shortly after, the 62-year-old was shot many times and killed while still in his car. After that, the vehicle swerved off the road and struck shrubs on Britt Avenue.

The Columbus community was shocked by McTyre’s murder, especially those who knew him from his lifetime of work in family services and education. He had been a devoted employee of the Department of Family and Children Services, a school counselor, and a professor.

A Life Dedicated to Helping Others

According to family members, McTyre was a good-hearted, devout guy who found meaning in serving others, particularly underprivileged kids and families. One of the most outspoken supporters of justice, his sister Toni, considered the emotional toll the loss has put on her.

My brother is someone I adore. He was my heart, and she spoke with tears as he left a piece of me behind.

As an active member of the fraternity Alpha Phi Alpha, McTyre also helped mentor young men in the neighborhood.

Investigation Remains Unresolved Despite Leads

Detective Emily Stice of the Columbus Police Department verified that bullet casings and CCTV footage from surrounding businesses were found at the scene. However, the murderer of McTyre remains unidentified in spite of these leads.

The family is in agony as a result of the absence of closure. Gladys Williams Tillmon, a childhood friend, repeated the call for clarification:

It will be valuable, even though you don’t think it will be. Please get in touch and soothe our hearts.

Community Urged to Speak Up

The public is still being asked for tips by authorities. Police and the family think someone might have seen something or knew important information that could lead to the case’s resolution. The investigation is still being handled by Detective Stice, and tips, both anonymous and named, are encouraged.
