North CarolinaWindsor Locks police confirmed this week that they have discovered and arrested a 29-year-old man who is suspected of robbing someone at gunpoint outside a nightclub in Connecticut last year.

Dontae Willis-Green Malik, the suspect, is presently being held in North Carolina on other charges. He is currently being sought for extradition by Connecticut authorities to face charges related to the armed robbery at the Blackboard Cafe on Spring Street on May 13, 2023.

Victim Targeted in Bar Parking Lot

The victim, who had been drinking inside the bar, was approached by a man requesting money in the parking lot shortly after 2:15 a.m. The suspect allegedly asked if the victim had Cash App, a digital payment tool, after the victim offered $10.

According to the police, things swiftly got out of hand.

The victim’s lower abdomen was struck by the barrel of a silver, semi-automatic handgun that the man had drawn. He pushed the victim to give Cash App codes in order to transfer money digitally and demanded his money.

The robber also displayed an ankle tracking device while allegedly claiming to be on the run from a murder in North Carolina. He informed the victim that the gun was a.40-caliber weapon before he ran away. He was last observed leaving in a dark SUV.

Police Traced Suspect to Nearby Hotel

Soon after the crime, Malik was named as the main suspect by investigators. At the time of the heist, he was said to be lodging at a hotel on Route 75 in Windsor Locks.

In December 2023, Windsor Locks police obtained an arrest warrant and charged him with:

  • First-degree robbery

  • First-degree threatening

  • Second-degree larceny

By that time, however, Malik had already departed the state. According to police, he most recently turned up in Raleigh, North Carolina, which was his last known residence.

Extradition Proceedings Underway

Authorities in Windsor Locks acknowledged they had communicated with North Carolina law enforcement, but they have not revealed the specifics of the accusations Malik is currently facing there. They’re trying hard to get him back to Connecticut so he can face trial.

Malik is still being detained in North Carolina while he awaits potential extradition.
