Married couple Employees of Cleveland Schools Killed in North Carolina Crash

Charlotte, North Carolina’s Chapel HillAuthorities reported that a Cleveland couple who worked for the Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) were killed in a collision on Interstate 85/40 in North Carolina on Friday.


Couple Identified as Donald and Maria Nunney

Donald Nunney, 55, and his wife, Maria Nunney, 50, were named as the victims. The pair was operating a 2018 Honda Odyssey when it drove off the road shortly before 1:20 p.m., collided with multiple trees, descended an embankment, and struck a huge tree, according to state patrol reports.

At the scene, Maria Nunney was declared deceased. After being transported by air to a Chapel Hill hospital, Donald Nunney passed away from his wounds.


Children Injured in Crash

Both of the couple’s children, a 9-year-old boy and a 14-year-old daughter, were hurt in the car as well. They were brought to nearby medical facilities. Their circumstances had not been made public as of Sunday.


Educators Remembered

Maria Nunney was a school counselor at Wilbur Wright PreK–8 School, and Donald Nunney was a language arts teacher at Joseph M. Gallagher Elementary School.

The collision occurs on Monday, the first day of courses for CMSD students.

According to CMSD Communications Officer Jon Benedict, “We can confirm that we will have additional counselors and resources on hand to support the student and staff communities at the many impacted schools.” Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this really sad time.
