Wilmington, North Carolina.A unique prehistoric treasure has been discovered by a North Carolina diver from the Atlantic Ocean’s depths.About 35 miles off the coast of Wilmington, Christian Corbittre recently found a six-inch megalodon tooth. According to fossil specialists, this is one of the rarest finds in the ocean, as reported by WBTV.
Before discovering the enormous teeth, seasoned diver Corbitt explored the ocean below for two days and one night. Adding to his already excellent harvest from the expedition, he collected 33 additional full fossil shark teeth in addition to this amazing discovery.
About the Megalodon
Between 23 million and 3.6 million years ago, a species of shark known as the Megalodon ruled the oceans. With an average length of 50 to 60 feet, these beasts were around three times longer than great white sharks today. Although they were able to travel across oceans in pursuit of food, fossil evidence indicates that they flourished in warm, coastal waters.
It is uncommon to find a tooth in such perfect form because these fossils are frequently buried or damaged for millions of years by sand and ocean currents. In terms of science and as artifacts of natural history, unbroken megalodon teeth are extremely valuable to both paleontologists and collectors.
