Georgia’s MidvilleAs the water levels in the Ogeechee River continue to rise, a flood warning is still in force for portions of Burke and Jenkins counties, endangering rural homes and roadways into Thursday afternoon.
Early Tuesday morning, the Charleston National Weather Service reported that river levels had risen to 6.5 feet, above the 6.0-foot flood stage. At 6.6 feet, the water is predicted to crest and then gradually recede.
Roads and Communities Impacted
The Midville access route to the River Bluff subdivision is unusable due to flooding. Furthermore, because of excessive water, the lower section of Johnson Road close to Herndon is still closed.Until the situation improves, authorities are advising cars to stay away from these locations.
Safety Precautions for Residents
Residents in low-lying districts are being cautioned by officials to be ready for sustained high water levels over the course of the next 48 hours. Among the suggested safety precautions are:
- Securing outdoor belongings
- Monitoring local weather updates
- Using alternate routes when traveling
It is anticipated that by early Thursday morning, the river would fall below flood stage. More rain, though, might make the floods worse and lengthen the road closures.
Monitoring the Situation
As things change, local authorities will keep providing updates. Road closures, weather alerts, and community safety notices will be covered by the Saluda Standard-Sentinel, which will also keep an eye on changes.
