Columbia, S.C.This week, South Carolina faces two threats: storm systems are increasing the likelihood of hazardous flooding throughout much of the state, while high heat conditions are continuing.
Excessive Heat Grips the State
Due to a persistent combination of triple-digit heat and excessive humidity, WLTX has issued a News19 Weather Impact Alert that is still in effect throughout Palmetto State. By Wednesday and Thursday, heat index readings are predicted to reach a top of 113 F, making prolonged outdoor activities dangerous.
Health officials are advising citizens to stay indoors or take frequent breaks in shaded places since heat index readings may still be near 109 F by Friday.
Avoid the dangers of heat-related illnesses. Weather experts at WLTX News19 cautioned that rest, hydration, and limiting exposure to the sun are crucial.
All of South Carolina is still under a Heat Advisory through Tuesday at 8 p.m., and parts of southeast Georgia are also under an Excessive Heat Warning until then.
Storms to Bring Rain, But Also Flood Threat
Later this week, there might be some respite from the heat, but there will be challenges.
A significant risk of heavy rainfall is predicted for the northern part of South Carolina beginning Thursday, with the threat intensifying on Friday. According to current estimates, there will be a slight risk of flooding rainfall throughout almost the whole state, with the exception of some areas in the Lowcountry.
In light of the anticipated wet trend that will persist throughout the weekend, the Weather Impact Alert has been extended into Friday and Saturday.
While northern areas, such as the Upstate and PeeDee, continue to be at moderate risk of flooding, the middle and southern parts of the state may get another wave of heavy rainfall on Saturday.
Precaution and Planning Urged
Local officials are warning citizens to be mindful of the weather, particularly if they reside in areas that are vulnerable to flooding. Throughout the rest of the week, outdoor laborers, vacationers, and vulnerable people are at greater danger due to the heat and potential flash flooding.
