South Carolina Heat Emergency: Temperatures Soar to 107°F, Heat Advisories in Effect Through Monday Night

Published On:

A scorching heat wave has descended over South Carolina, causing heat index readings to soar to 112 degrees Fahrenheit in the Midlands and triggering numerous heat advisories and warnings from the National Weather Service.

Lexington, Sumter, Orangeburg, Saluda, and Richland are among the many counties included by the advisory. Alerts will remain in effect until 9 p.m. on Sunday, and an Extreme Heat Watch will remain in effect until 8 p.m. on Monday.

Dangerous Heat Index Nears Record Levels

According to the NWS Columbia office, Sunday and Monday are predicted to see actual high temperatures of 103 F, with humidity making it seem much hotter at up to 112 F. Vulnerable populations will have no respite from overnight lows that only drop to the low 80s.

The warning alerts people to the higher risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly those who:

  • Children

  • Outdoor workers

  • The elderly

  • People without access to air conditioning

Authorities are asking citizens to stay inside during rush hour, drink plenty of water, and visit their neighbors, particularly the elderly or those without air conditioning.

Impact on Travel and Infrastructure

Drivers on I-20, I-26, and I-77 should anticipate possible lane closures or delays as road crews may modify their work schedules to avoid extreme heat.

In anticipation of spikes in electricity consumption that can put pressure on certain areas of the power grid, utility providers have started to prepare. Although they are not anticipated, blackouts could still occur if usage surpasses projections.
