String of Unlawful Vehicle Entries Over Weekend

The occurrences happened in the Glenn Street extension area, which is just outside the city borders of Newberry, between late Thursday night and early Monday morning. According to Sheriff Foster, the suspect broke into open cars and took a variety of little objects. The teenager would proceed to the next car without damaging the first one if it was locked.

According to Foster, none of the cars had been physically broken into. This child only looked for doors that weren’t locked.

Nine of the targeted cars were located in the county, while two of them were inside the city limits of Newberry.

The juvenile was identified and taken into custody by the Newberry Police Department, School Resource Officer officers, and the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office. Because of his age, his identity has not been made public.

The teenager was given to the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice for additional handling after the arrest.

Although the amount of material taken was small, officials pointed out that the case brings to light a persistent problem with crimes involving unlocked vehicles, many of which might be avoided with basic safety measures.
