Man wanted for alleged deputy assault captured

A multi-agency manhunt for a White County man accused of assaulting a Habersham County deputy has come to an end.

34-year-old Jonathan William Harris, of Sautee-Nacoochee, has been captured, according to the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office. The announcement was made Thursday night on the agency’s official Facebook page, where officials added that “more details [are] to come.” As of now, no additional information has been released about the circumstances of Harris’ arrest.

Two-day manhunt

Harris was wanted in connection with an early morning incident on Wednesday, June 11, in the Chopped Oak community off Talmadge Drive in northern Habersham County.

According to the GBI’s preliminary investigation, at about 3:30 a.m., a Habersham County deputy conducted a traffic stop on a truck pulling a trailer with two flat tires. The truck came to a stop at the end of Juniper Trail. As the deputy stepped out of his patrol car, the truck driver, later identified as Harris, “rammed into the patrol car, causing it to hit the deputy and knock him to the ground,” the GBI press release said. “Harris got out of the truck. The deputy fired his gun, and Harris ran from the scene.”

At this time, no public information has been released indicating whether Harris was armed.

EMTs treated the deputy for minor injuries at the scene. The GBI is investigating his use of force.

The sheriff’s office is handling the criminal investigation. Harris faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, obstruction, fleeing and eluding police, possession of a firearm or knife during the commission of a crime, and theft by receiving stolen property. Investigators say Harris also had outstanding warrants from an unrelated case.
